The Smart Energy Solutions for Africa (SESA) project has announced a "Replication and Scale-up" call for entrepreneurs in Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Tanzania. SESA, funded by the European Commission's Horizon2020 program, aims to develop and test sustainable energy solutions and business models to accelerate the green transition and improve energy access in Africa.
SESA's main objective is to support affordable solutions that provide reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy services, creating business opportunities for development. The project focuses on three areas: access to energy, productive use of energy, and circular economy. Selected innovations will be developed and tested in Kenya, and based on the results, aspects of these innovations will be validated in Ghana, South Africa, Malawi, and Morocco. The goal is to strengthen the replicability of the technologies and business concepts.
To initiate the replication process, four additional countries (Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Tanzania) will be supported in adopting the most promising technologies. The SESA Replication and Scale-up Call seeks expressions of interest from suitable enterprises and innovators willing to offer their services and products for the replication and scale-up of selected technologies and business models.
The call provides between EUR 50,000 to EUR 100,000 per selected enterprise for the design, implementation, and evaluation of replication projects. Consortiums are welcome to apply, but the service agreement will be signed with the lead partner only. Interested enterprises must be operational in the selected countries and should submit project proposals outlining how they plan to boost the replication and scale-up of the designated technologies. Feasibility assessments exploring the replication potential in remote communities, such as in Namibia, are also eligible.
The focus areas for the call include renewable energy solutions, energy storage systems, energy-efficient appliances, sustainable agriculture and food processing, waste-to-energy technologies, and innovative financing and business models. The deadline for submission is June 25th, 2023. The selected enterprises will have the opportunity to contribute to the green transition and energy access goals in Africa, while also benefiting from the support and funding provided by the SESA project.
